Plant description

Wintergreen, also known as Checkerberry, is a robust, cold-resistant evergreen shrub belonging to the Ericaceae family. It grows to a height of 10-15 cm and boasts thick, oval-shaped glossy green leaves. From July to September, the plant produces delicate, white, bell-shaped flowers measuring approximately 5-8 mm. In the winter months, it yields vibrant red berries, which are 1-2 cm in size and are commonly used for Christmas and New Year’s decorations. Historically, Checkerberry has earned its name as “Teaberry” due to its use as a medicinal herb and as an ingredient in tea preparation. Even today, it remains a familiar plant, used to flavor chewing gum and toothpaste.

Wintergreen Essential Oil Properties & Uses

Approximately 0.7% of Wintergreen essential oil is extracted from its leaves through steam distillation and has a colorless to reddish-brown color. Its primary component is methyl salicylate, lending it a sharp, robust, and refreshing medicinal aroma. The scent evokes the reminiscent notes of a poultice, creating a distinctive olfactory experience. It harmonizes well with herbal and woody essential oils, as well as with fresh and sweet notes of Sweet Orange and Bergamot oils. Given its slightly potent and unique fragrance, it is advisable to use minimal amounts in blends to harness its therapeutic properties rather than overwhelming with its scent.
